DESTRUCTION OF PUBLIC ASSET IS CRIMINAL AND UNPATRIOTIC - VOLDI

By Comrade Amb Victor Monday Olajide

In 2025, the Vision-One Leadership Development Initiative (VOLDI) took a significant step towards addressing the rampant destruction and vandalization of critical national infrastructure and assets in Nigeria. By hosting the annual Youth, Civil Society, and Stakeholders Summit in partnership with the National Council for Civil Society Organizations (NACSSO), VOLDI aimed not only to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the vandalism of power, telecom, oil and gas infrastructures but also to foster a culture of responsibility among the youth and various stakeholders.
The summit brought together a diverse array of participants, including youth leaders, civil society organizations, government officials, and stakeholders from various sectors. This collective gathered to deliberate on pressing national issues while emphasizing the dire need for stewardship and accountability in protecting the nation's infrastructure. The high attendance reflected the growing concern among Nigerians about the escalating rates of infrastructure vandalism, which not only undermines economic development but also jeopardizes the safety and well-being of communities across the country.
Throughout the summit, various speakers shared their insights and experiences, addressing the culture of irresponsibility and indifference that has unfortunately characterized responses to the destruction of critical national assets. Many speakers described how this culture perpetuates the cycle of vandalism and urges the need for a multifaceted approach to mitigate its impact. They called upon the government, civil society, and the private sector to collaborate actively in promoting policies that discourage vandalistic behavior and encourage civic responsibility.
A critical theme that emerged was the need for education and awareness campaigns targeting the youth. The speakers highlighted that young people are not just passive observers of their environment; they are active participants who can drive meaningful change. By engaging the youth through creative initiatives, such as workshops and community outreach programs, it is possible to instill a sense of ownership over local infrastructure and encourage pride in maintaining the nation's assets. This holistic approach emphasizes that preventing vandalism requires more than law enforcement; it requires community engagement and a change in societal attitudes.
Moreover, the summit offered a platform for innovative solutions and collaborative projects aimed at curbing destruction and vandalism. Participants were encouraged to brainstorm effective strategies, such as leveraging technology to monitor and protect critical infrastructure and implementing community reward systems that recognize and incentivize positive behavior. Emphasis was placed on the power of collaboration across sectors to create sustainable frameworks that not only deter vandalism but also contribute to national resilience.
In conclusion, the 2025 Youth, Civil Society, and Stakeholders Summit organized by VOLDI was a crucial initiative that highlighted the pressing issues surrounding the destruction of critical national infrastructure in Nigeria. Through the partnership with NACSSO, the event fostered a dialogue among diverse stakeholders, urging a collective response to address this persistent challenge. As participants left the summit, they carried with them a renewed commitment to fostering a culture of responsibility, accountability, and active engagement in securing Nigeria's future infrastructure. Efforts to curb vandalism must continue beyond the summit, transforming collective awareness into lasting actions that protect the nation's critical assets for generations to come.
