The African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship Kicks Off With a Bang Promises Two Weeks of Excitement

On April 4, 2025, the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship was officially declared open by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who serves as the Grand Matron for this prestigious event. The championship marks a significant milestone in promoting women’s sports across the continent and fosters a spirit of unity and camaraderie among participating nations. Held in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, the event is set to span two exciting weeks of competitive volleyball, showcasing the incredible talent and determination of African women athletes.

The opening ceremony was graced by a host of dignitaries, reflecting the importance of the event. Among those in attendance were Customs Comptroller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Engr. Musa Nimrod, President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation; Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission; and Bouchra Hajij, President of the Confederation of African Volleyball. Each of these leaders offered their goodwill messages, emphasizing the role of sports in empowering women, promoting healthy lifestyles, and fostering teamwork and collaboration.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s presence as the Grand Matron highlighted the strong support for women’s sports within Nigeria. Her advocacy is crucial in encouraging young women to engage in athletics and aspire to top-level competition, breaking the stereotypes and barriers that often limit women in sports.
