By Comrade Marvelous Omeiza Olajide

The Coalition of Youth on Security & Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Development, organized a significant one-day multi-stakeholder summit focused on addressing pressing social vices affecting Nigerian youth. This summit, which aimed to unify young Nigerians in the fight against serious issues such as cultism, internet fraud, money laundering, drug abuse, prostitution, child trafficking, and economic sabotage, gathered a diverse group of stakeholders including government officials, youth leaders, civil society organizations, and law enforcement agencies.
The theme of the summit, “Unifying Nigerian Youth in the Fight Against Social Vices,” reflects the urgent need for collective action and collaboration among different sectors of society to create a safer, more secure environment for the youth. In recent years, these social vices have posed significant threats not only to the youth but also to the broader Nigerian society, leading to increased crime rates, social instability, and a decrease in the overall quality of life.

A highlight of the summit was the recognition of the Chief of Staff to the Government of Cross River, who has been a staunch advocate for youth emancipation and empowerment. His commitment to addressing youth issues was underscored by his representative, Hon. Ushie Bathlomew, who delivered a speech emphasizing the government’s dedication to working alongside youth organizations like CONYSSA. Hon. Bathlomew noted that empowering the youth through education, skill development, and awareness campaigns is vital in combating the various social vices that currently plague the nation.
The Importance of Collective Action

The summit served as a platform for stakeholders to share insights, strategies, and best practices for effectively addressing the multifaceted challenges that young people face today. Breakout sessions facilitated discussions on each identified social vice, allowing participants to delve into the underlying causes and potential solutions. From understanding the psychological factors that lead to substance abuse to exploring the economic conditions that fuel internet fraud and money laundering, participants were encouraged to adopt a holistic approach to these issues.

Experts in the field highlighted the role of peer influence, lack of education, and socio-economic conditions as contributing factors to the vulnerability of youth to engaging in illicit activities. The summit sparked important conversations on the need for comprehensive policies that not only penalize offenders but also provide rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities for those affected by these vices.

Empowering the Youth

Empowerment emerged as a recurring theme throughout the summit. Various presentations emphasized the importance of equipping young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate their environment successfully. Workshops focusing on entrepreneurship, vocational training, and digital literacy were proposed as essential components of any youth development strategy. The aim is to provide alternatives for young people, helping them to realize their potential and contribute positively to society.

Furthermore, there was a call to action for youth to take an active role in advocating for change within their communities. By promoting awareness campaigns and engaging in volunteer efforts, youth can challenge the norms that perpetuate social vices. Collective ownership of this fight will not only foster unity but also ensure a sustained effort in addressing these challenges.

Conclusion

The CONYSSA summit marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle against social vices in Nigeria. By uniting various stakeholders and placing youth at the center of the discourse, the summit has laid the groundwork for sustained collaboration and action. The recognition of leaders like Hon. Ushie Bathlomew demonstrates the significance of government support in youth-led initiatives, fostering hope that the tide can indeed be turned against the blight of cultism, internet fraud, drug abuse, and other social ills. As the nation moves forward, it is imperative that the dialogue continues, fostering an environment where young individuals are empowered, informed, and united in the quest for a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
