6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk: A Call to Action for a Better Nigeria

On May 29, 2025, the National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NDSG) in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and the National Orientation Agency organized the 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk at Eagle Square, Abuja. The theme of the event was "Making Democracy Count: A Mid-Term Impact Assessment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Administration."

In his opening address, Dr. Shima Adum Anchor, the Anchor of the 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk, welcomed distinguished citizens, esteemed guests, and compatriots to the event. He emphasized that the walk was not just a civic exercise but a moment of reflection, renewal, and responsibility. Dr. Anchor noted that democracy is not just about elections and manifestos but about tangible benefits such as functional public schools, job opportunities for youth, maternal healthcare, and security.

The walk was a nationwide effort, with Nigerians from all 36 state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory participating in unison. Dr. Anchor emphasized that the walk was not a protest but a moment of evaluation and engagement. He urged citizens to view democracy as a daily decision, rather than a destination, and to take an active role in shaping the country's future.

Dr. Anchor's address highlighted the importance of citizen participation in democracy, stating, "Democracy is not an abstract noun. It is public schools that work. Democracy is youth with jobs and dignity. Democracy is mothers not dying in childbirth. Democracy is security that doesn’t fear the night, and a country that works for the least, not just the elite."

Other speakers at the event, including Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Shehu and Dr. Dave Ogbole, echoed Dr. Anchor's sentiments. Dr. Ogbole, an NDSG executive board member, gave a vote of confidence to President Tinubu's administration, urging citizens to keep faith and remain law-abiding. He expressed optimism that the next two years of the administration would yield even more positive outcomes for Nigerians.

The National Democracy Stakeholders Group's efforts to promote democracy and good governance in Nigeria are commendable. The 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk served as a platform for citizens to reflect on the progress made so far and to call on leaders to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians. As the country moves forward, it is essential to sustain the momentum of civic engagement and to ensure that democracy delivers for all citizens.

The event's theme, "Making Democracy Count," underscores the need for tangible results from democratic governance. As Nigerians, it is our collective responsibility to hold leaders accountable and to demand policies that promote the common good. The 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk was a significant step in this direction, and its impact will be felt for years to come.

In conclusion, the 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk was a resounding success, with citizens from all walks of life coming together to promote democracy and good governance. The event served as a reminder that democracy is a daily decision that requires active participation and engagement from all citizens. As Nigeria continues on its democratic journey, it is essential to sustain the momentum of civic engagement and to ensure that democracy delivers for all citizens.
