In observance of World Drug Day, recognized globally on June 26, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the First Lady of Edo State, has emphasized the critical importance of discouraging substance abuse among young people. She underscored the severe and far-reaching consequences that substance abuse has on individuals, families, and the broader community.

Mrs. Anani articulated the myriad dangers associated with drug abuse, which include addiction, declining physical and mental health, financial difficulties, and the disintegration of family units.
She urged young individuals to make informed and responsible choices prioritizing their health, well-being, and future aspirations. “Substance abuse is not merely a personal issue; it poses a significant societal challenge with repercussions that extend throughout communities. It is essential for our youth to recognize the risks involved and to embrace healthier alternatives,” she stated.

World Drug Day, officially referred to as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987 to raise global awareness regarding the dangers of drug abuse and to promote unified efforts toward achieving a drug-free society.
The use of illicit drugs is linked to numerous challenges, including an increased likelihood of mental health disorders, the spread of infectious diseases, job loss, strained relationships, and heightened crime rates. Effectively addressing this issue necessitates a comprehensive approach that includes education, prevention, treatment, and community support.
Mrs. Anani’s advocacy aligns with this year’s global theme, emphasizing the pivotal role of evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies. She called for enhanced community collaboration and the allocation of resources to support individuals affected by substance abuse.

By cultivating a culture of awareness, support, and accountability, Mrs. Anani believes society can empower its youth and protect future generations from the dangers posed by substance abuse.
