Ten Things to Know About Senator Tanko Almakura, Chairman UBEC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura as the new Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission, (UBEC).

Below are ten things you need to know about the Educationist, Businessman and Politician who has been on the executive and lately legislative tiers of government.

1. Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura was born in 1952 in Lafia, in present Nasarawa State.  

2. He attended Dunama Primary School, Lafia, 1959 to 1966, Keffi Teachers College, 1967 to 1971, and then Government Teachers - Now College of Education - Uyo, 1972 to 1975. He passed with flying colours and gained admission in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1975 to 1978, graduating with a Bachelor of Education Degree.

3. As a trained Teacher, during his National Youth Service Corp, he was a teacher at the Government College, Makurdi.

4. He was an Assistant Producer at the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria, (BCNN).

5. The Educationist ventured into the private sector and excelled as a businessman, specifically farming, real estate, hospitality and captain of industry.

6. The Professional Teacher and businessman was a student politician in school, he ventured into mainstream politics and served as Youth Leader in the National Party of Nigeria, (NPN).

7. The Politician contested under then newly formed Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC) and defeated the PDP Governor of Nasarawa State. The only Governor of the party that was formed few months to election.

8. His political foresight led the defunct CPC to the merger with like-minded political parties that led to the formation of All Progressive Congress, (APC), he was elected a Senator and the party is now the ruling party when Muhammadu Buhari won two consecutive elections and now has Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President.

9. As an Educationist, during his term as Governor, he established Government Special School, Lafia, an institution for students living with disabilities, the school provides: Free tuition, meal, transportation. He has empowered State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB) to build, refurbish and upgrade schools with classrooms, fence, motorized boreholes, sports facilities and retraining of Teachers. And employed graduates despite Living with disabilities as pensionable civil servants.

10. He supports his wife, Hajiya Salamatu Al-Makura to establishe a foundation, called Mother and Child Care Enhancement Foundation, (McCEF) that trains youths free towards being self-reliant. Indeed many are benefitting from the scholarship of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the new Chairman of Universal Basic Education Commission.
