THE CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF PLAYED HOST TO DG NIS PROMISE COLLABORATION FOR GROWTH
This visit was not just a formality—it was a mission. A mission to reignite collaboration between two vital institutions—the Nigerian military and the NIS—towards a common goal: nation-building through sports.
General Musa’s warm reception and firm commitment to partnering with the institute in the training and retraining of military coaches and athletes is inspiring and reassuring. His declaration that “sports is an engine room to fight insecurity” is not just a statement—it is a truth we must act on.
As someone who understands the power of grassroots sports, The DG wholeheartedly align with the CDS’s passion for youth engagement. If we truly want to reduce crime and social unrest, then we must channel the energy of our young people into productive ventures—and sports remains one of the most powerful tools we have.
During the discussion, they both shared concern that although the NIS was established over 50 years ago, it only enjoyed meaningful development for the first five years. Since then, it has operated far below its potential. But we are back—repositioned, re-energized, and ready to fulfill our mandate of training the managers, coaches, and professionals of the sports ecosystem.
The military, with its structure, discipline, and tradition of excellence in sports, is a natural partner. This partnership can set the pace for other agencies and institutions across the country.
Beyond the training collaboration, we also touched on the urgent need to revive state leagues. These leagues can engage thousands of youths, create jobs, reduce crime, and spark local economies back to life.
Sports is not just for medals—it’s a tool for economic revival, social cohesion, and global recognition. That is why, under my leadership and in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are working to ensure that certificates issued by NIS gain both national and international recognition.
