The Indigenous Youth Council of Ogoni People (IYCOP), a frontline advocacy group championing the rights and development of Ogoni youths, has lauded the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its bold and sustained strides in advancing environmental justice, youth development, and inclusive governance in Ogoni land.
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Matthew Dighi, who also serves as the Deputy National Youth Leader of PANDEF, the Council praised the administration for demonstrating genuine interest in the socioeconomic and environmental renewal of the Ogoni region.
The IYCOP leader recalled some of the gestures done to the Ogoni's by the President Tinubu since assumption of office like the reinstatement of Professor Zabby, Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), the conferment of posthumous awards on environmental icon Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Four. This symbolic and deeply meaningful act reflects a government that recognizes history, honors sacrifice, and promotes healing and unity.
The Council also commended the appointment of renowned Ogoni leader, Mr. Ledum Mitee into the defunct NNPC board, buttressing that such inclusion reflects a recognition of his longstanding role in the Ogoni struggle and sends a strong message of trust and reconciliation from the Federal Government to the Ogoni people soliciting reappointment into position of trust
In addition, the group acknowledged the Federal Government’s receipt of the Ogoni Development Report, a critical step toward informed policymaking and the effective delivery of projects aimed at addressing long-standing developmental challenges in the region.
The establishment of the Federal University of Environment in Ogoni land was also hailed as a milestone achievement. As a tribute to the legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa, IYCOP is calling for the institution to be officially named in his honor, to further immortalize his contributions to environmental justice and human rights.
The Council equally expressed appreciation for the peaceful climate being restored in Ogoni land—thanks to federal efforts—which is now enabling business and investment to return, unlocking economic opportunities for the youth and local population.

His youth-friendly programmes and initiatives have created an enabling environment for young people to thrive, discover their potential, and tap into government-supported platforms for growth. The Minister's proactive engagement with youth groups nationwide has earned this administration the distinction of being the most youth-friendly government in Nigeria’s recent history, the group stated.
The Indigenous Youth Council of Ogoni People reaffirms its unwavering support for the administration’s policies and urges continued engagement with grassroots youth structures in the region to sustain peace, development, and environmental justice.
