NCSU Confers Prestigious Shield Award on President Tinubu Others at 114th Anniversary

The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), one of the country’s oldest and most enduring trade unions, has conferred its highest honour, the Shield Award, on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in recognition of his administration’s commitment to the welfare, morale, and advancement of Nigerian workers.

The award was presented on Monday, 28 September 2026, at Merit House, Abuja, as a centrepiece of activities marking the union’s 114th anniversary. The NCSU, which traces its roots to the pre-independence era and today comprises 84 affiliates, has long advocated for the rights and improved conditions of civil servants and workers across the federation.
The Shield Award is reserved exclusively for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and unwavering dedication to the cause of Nigerian workers. In conferring the honour, NCSU National President Comrade Oluwole Sunday described President Tinubu as “a true shield of the Nigerian worker” and a leader whose policies have consistently prioritised the interests of the labour force. The union noted that the President’s interventions have raised morale within the civil service and reflected genuine concern for the well-being of workers nationwide.

The award was received on behalf of the President by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo, SAN. The presentation was led by Comrade Oluwole Sunday, joined by the immediate past National President and Chairman of the Occasion, Comrade Lawrence Ameachi; Chairman of the Federal Council, Comrade Adoga Gupada; and Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Yildet Bigwan.

After the ceremony, Minister Keyamo displayed the award in his office in the company of the union’s leadership. The Minister, who was himself recognised by the NCSU for his solidarity with the Nigerian workforce, expressed deep appreciation for the honour, describing it as particularly significant coming from the nation’s oldest trade union.

In his remarks, Keyamo highlighted President Tinubu’s consistent compassion toward workers and his readiness to act swiftly on issues affecting their welfare. He cited, among other interventions, the recent presidential approval of ₦36 billion for former aviation workers, with payments already at the final stage of processing.

A statement issued by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the Minister, confirmed the details of the conferment and the subsequent display of the award.

The recognition underscores the NCSU’s assessment of the current administration’s engagement with labour matters at a time when the union continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the interests of public-sector workers. As the NCSU marks more than a century of advocacy, the Shield Award to President Tinubu stands as a notable acknowledgement of efforts aimed at strengthening the welfare and dignity of Nigerian workers.
